Vanguard Adds Former DMB, Agriculture Director Mitch Irwin In "Of Counsel" Role
We are pleased to announce the addition of entrepreneur, state department director and former state Senator Mitch Irwin as a top level strategist.
“I was initially attracted to Vanguard Public Affairs because of their unique approach to problem solving and their eclectic roster of clients, but as I learned more, I realized what a special company it is evolving into,” Irwin said. “Vanguard is quickly becoming a trailblazing organization that I wanted to be an integral part of moving forward.
Irwin will work with Vanguard in an official of-counsel role, providing strategic guidance to Vanguard’s roster of financial, education, and non-profit clients, said TJ Bucholz, Vanguard Public Affairs President and Chief Executive Officer.
“I’ve had the privilege to know Mitch in many capacities over the years, and have always been impressed with his political and business acumen. In fact, when we thought about adding another top strategist to our roster of talent, I kept suggesting a ‘Mitch Irwin’ archetype for the role. I never envisioned being able to add the actual Mitch Irwin at Vanguard – it’s a real testament to not being afraid to ask,” Bucholz said.
Irwin, who also served as director of the state of Michigan’s Department of Management and Budget from 2003 to 2005 and as director of the state of Michigan’s Department of Agriculture from 2005 to 2007, is renowned for his leadership skills, business experience, and creative thinking by officials on both sides of the political aisle.
Irwin previously served in the Michigan Senate from 1979 to 1991, serving as Democratic Floor Leader. He represented the eastern Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan. He is also an in-demand strategist because of his unique understanding of the political landscape, Bucholz said.
Currently, he is owner and president of The Irwin Group, Ltd., an East Lansing-based business development, investment and consulting firm. Irwin also participates in numerous limited liability companies that have developed a number of Marriott hotels and other small businesses around the state.
Irwin’s addition is a strategic hire for current and prospective clients – Vanguard Public Affairs does not lobby the government at any level and is not registered for such activity.
