Lessons Learned from the Intern
Interning at Vanguard Public Affairs has been a growing experience full of learning moments, celebration and everything in between. And it all started with an interview.
This was my first professional interview. I was nervous but flush with excitement. The room was full of my potential co-workers, which was intimidating. I tried to thrive off the adrenaline that was flowing through my body by answering everyone’s questions to the best of my ability. It must have worked because I got the job!
When I arrived on my first day, I figured I would be running coffee and completing small tasks that would not be all that important. To my delight, I was wrong. Every day at Vanguard was a unique learning experience. I became more politically savvy, and more aware of my own abilities and my place in this world. Vanguard made me feel like a part of the team, and not ‘just’ an intern.
My workload included researching, writing social media posts, pitching to reporters, compiling media lists, writing blog posts (like this one), transcribing interviews and a multitude of other responsibilities. Whether big or small pieces of the puzzle, the effort I put into a project was important – what I did was valued.
If the terrific learning opportunities weren’t enough, I also enjoyed the work environment. It was challenging – but rewarding. Any time I had a question, other staff was there to answer, advise and teach me the right way to do the task at hand. Seeing how talented my colleagues were made me push myself even more.
Overall, Vanguard helped me grow in my professional abilities beyond what I could have ever imagined. I’d like to thank Vanguard for giving me the chance to spread my wings and grow as a young professional.
