It may come as no surprise to hear Facebook is the world’s third most-visited website. We use it to stay up on current news, learn about local events and businesses, keep in touch with family and friends, shop, trade with neighbors and more. With 66 percent of monthly users logging onto the app or website daily, it’s critical for a business to have a strong Facebook presence.

The best practices outlined below are easy ways to reach your audience, increase engagement and improve the overall look of your page.

Timing is everything

According to Hootsuite, the best time to post on Facebook is between 12 and 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 12 to 1 p.m. on the weekends. Facebook isn’t “one size fits all,” so check Facebook Insights to see what works best for your page.

Keep it short

Facebook’s ideal character length is between 40-80 characters, so it’s important to keep posts short and concise. If 80 characters won’t cut it and you have a lot to write, try using Facebook Notes.

Quality over quantity

For pages with fewer than 10,000 followers, posting 1-2 posts per day is optimal. Research from Track Social shows a significant drop in engagement from a page’s first post to its second, with the second post getting only 57 percent of likes and 78 percent of comments.

Picture perfect

A post with visuals garners 87 percent more engagements than one without, so the photos you upload better be high quality and follow Facebook’s guidelines. When taking photos meant to be shared on Facebook, it’s also best to take them horizontal as vertical images are often cut off on users’ timelines.

Interact with fans

If a user comments on a post, reply or like it so they feel heard. Posts with more conversations are favored by Facebook’s algorithm — so don’t be shy!

Take advantage of the tools

Go Live, create a poll, add to your story. All of these tools are at your disposal and Facebook’s algorithm rewards the use of each. One study shows Facebook Live grabs comments at 10 times the rate of recorded videos. Be creative and it will likely pay off.

Delete the link

Facebook automatically populates a link preview when you hit enter. You should delete it after the preview appears. Don’t ask questions, just do it. Your post will look neater and more professional, trust me.
