Tell us about your role at Vanguard
As Partner at Vanguard, I take an active role in all major decisions, from budgets and hiring, to bringing in new business, to ensuring that we not just meet, but exceed our clients’ expectations. My role also encompasses leading specific teams on clients or projects, and doing whatever needs to be done, from creating communications strategies, to writing radio ads, to sending out press releases. In a small company like ours, there are no ivory towers, and that’s the way I like it.
What sparked your interest in politics?
Growing up in a family that regularly discussed political issues and current events around the dinner table, I’ve been tuned into politics for as long as I can remember. My father, now retired, was a union electrician and worked as a general foreman on government building projects around Lansing. We’d talk about things like the downsizing of MIOSHA under Gov. John Engler and the specific ways that it made him less safe on the job. He never missed the opportunity to teach me the value that his politically active union (IBEW local 665), brought to him, our family and the middle class – lessons that shaped my political views going forward.
What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with loved ones – my two children, a special someone, family and friends. Given the choice of doing almost anything, I choose enjoying a good meal and conversation pretty much every time. If it’s while visiting a new place or enjoying an adventure, so much the better! I would also say spending time with my dog, Chip, but he’s integral to my work day as well as my personal life. He sits by my side at my home office in Ann Arbor, and travels to Lansing with me as well.
What is your favorite smartphone app?
Trip Advisor. I love to travel and I love to try different restaurants near and far. Trip Advisor is my go-to app for finding great new experiences, and it’s also my guilty pleasure when I just want to daydream.
