Tell us about your role at Vanguard.
I’m working as the Vice President of Vanguard Public Affairs. As Vice President, I provide senior counsel to foundations, advocacy organizations, private equity companies, school districts, law firms, corporations and regulatory agencies, as well as manage public advocacy and municipal millage campaigns.
What issues are most important to you?
I have sixteen years of experience in higher education and eighteen years in local government. I am also involved in policy development, and I plan on using that expertise to assist communities in Michigan with post secondary institutions to achieve their joint goals of creating livable “sense of place” communities that can attract new residents.
How do you define success?
While working at the University of Michigan in the Office of State Outreach, we defined success by building relationships between the university and communities across the state. Sometimes our engagements were very successful and at other times they were not. But at the end of the day, it was the conversations we were having and building long term relationships with community partners that helped us be successful.
